Senator Tommy Williams resigning

State Sen. Tommy Williams, R- The Woodlands is resigning from the Texas Senate, the Texas Tribune reported today.

According to the Tribune, on Wednesday afternoon Williams told his staff he would be leaving the Senate.

Gary Scharrer, Williams’ communication director, said the senator’s office would be issuing a press statement today, but is not yet prepared to confirm or deny the departure.

The Tribune reported Williams, a Texas A&M alumni, has been approached about a government relations position within the Texas A&M University System.

Williams’ District 4 includes all or portions of Jefferson, Chambers, Galveston, Harris and Montgomery counties.

He is the chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, and led budget negotiations in the Legislature's upper chamber. He also serves on the State Affairs, Administration and Open Government committees.

Williams made Texas’ Monthly’s best legislators list this last session.

In addition to his legislative duties, he is a CPA, and served as president of Woodforest Financial Services, an affiliate of Woodforest National Bank.
