— Little Jace Nguyen is looking for some superheroes to help him battle leukemia.

The Port Arthur child, age 2, was diagnosed with lymphoblastic leukemia on Aug. 20 and is undergoing treatment at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston and may be facing a bone marrow transplant, his aunt Stacy Gonzales said.

A benefit will be held form 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Market Basket parking lot facing Nederland Avenue in Nederland. There will be links, boudain, baked goods, T-shirts and raffle drawings for items such as floor seats to Justin Timberlake’s December concert in Houston, autographed sports memorabilia, Pelican Elite Cooler, saltwater fishing poles and more.

There will also be a blood drive from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for Nguyen. Photo identification required.

Gonzales said the superhero theme came about when the child was diagnosed.

“He was wearing a Superman shirt. Then for some reason he kept pointing to himself and call him “man,” short for Superman,” Gonzales said. “From then on, he would always want to wear his superman shirt everyday. So we came up with the idea that we are going to fight alongside with Jace too and be a part of his super hero team by giving him and his family support and prayers. So from there, me and Glenda Little from Dressy Designs, helped designed his shirt and flyers around that theme.”

The aunt describes Jace as a fighter, adding that he continued to be energetic and full of life even while undergoing chemotherapy treatments.

“He is such a sweet little boy who is always smiling, dancing and loves to give hugs,” she said. “Jace is one tough boy and will not let anything get in the way of him being happy.”

Jace’s parents, Roxanne Gonzales and John Nguyen, are currently not able to work full time.

“Jaces entire family, friends and just the whole community has really all came together to help support Jace alongside his sister and parents,” she said. “Our goal is to do our best to help relieve any financial or emotional stress his parents are going through. We just want them to focus on our little man because honestly they have the toughest job.”

Besides the benefit on Saturday there will be another benefit in Houston hosted by friends and family on Oct. 19. There is also an online donation website http://www.youcaring.com/medical-fundraiser/jace-kicks-leukemia-s-ass-/84642

Gonzales noted that the benefit wouldn’t occur without the help of numerous people who have come together with a united goal to help Jace and family.

Donations can be made to Neches Federal Credit Union, 2239 Nall Street, Port Neches, TX 77651. Make checks payable to Jace's Superheroes Account # 51385-8.
