Hundreds take advantage of West Side health fair

PORT ARTHUR — Christine Malveaux doesn’t take her health for granted.

At 78 years old, Malveaux, who also volunteers with the South East Texas Foster Grandparent Program, was one of more than 200 people who took part in a health fair at Port Arthur’s new Westside Development Center on Saturday.

“I love health fairs. I try to make as many of them as I can,” Malveaux said. “I like to get my blood pressure checked and I like everything they pass out here. This is a benefit to the community.”

More than 20 health-related vendors and organizations were on hand to distribute health education information, provide childhood immunizations, perform blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar screenings as well as HIV screenings. Information was also available on hurricane preparedness, cancer treatment and medical management and more.

Elizabeth Guidry stopped by a table where she had her blood sugar checked.

“This helps when you can’t afford the tests; they are very expensive, so I like to take advantage of health fairs,” Guidry said.

Melvin Getwood, president of the Westside Neighborhood Association, was pleased with the turnout.

“This is a great day for the city of Port Arthur as well as Westside Neighborhood Association,” Getwood said as people filed past and into a room designated for health screenings.

Patricia Hebert, co-chair of the event, called the turnout “awesome.”

“We are very pleased,” Hebert said. “I’m sure there are many people who learned things about their health today that will bring about a positive change for them.”

Debora Asbury-Scott, assurance coordinator with Motiva, was pleased with the first big event held in the Westside Community Development Center. Motiva made a $850,000 donation toward construction of the facility.

She commended the partnership between the fenceline community, the city and Motiva.

Organizers hope to present more health fairs and other community events in the future, they said.
