Nederland council awards city hall construction bid

NEDERLAND — A Beaumont company has been awarded a contract for work on the new Nederland City Hall.

Nederland City Council awarded the $1.265 million bid to Beaumont based Bruce’s General Construction earlier this week.

Nederland City Manager Chris Duque said architect Dohn LaBiche has a good working history with the company and gave a positive recommendation after bids were opened earlier this month.

The contract starts next week, Duque added.

This is the first part of a two phase project to construct a new city hall to be located at 207 N. 12th St. The second phase is to gut and remodel the current city hall/police station/fire station.

“We are trying to coordinate this so it is a very smooth transition,” Duque said. “The plan is still to go out for bids (on the second phase) by this summer.”

Even with the best laid plans, the fire and police will still end up being displaced for up to a year while their home is under renovations.

“We expect the second project to take up to a year so that’s something we’re going to have to work on,” he said. “We have some ideas that have to be addressed and hopefully will have something in place by this summer although we won’t have to move until we’re ready to start construction.”

Mid-County Dispatch, the heart of the three cities dispatch, was recently upgraded and will not be disturbed during the process.

“This will be one of the most delicate issues, keeping the dispatch on through the entire process,” he said.

Nederland Mayor Dick Nugent said he is excited about the strides being made toward the new city hall and the second phase of the project as well.

“It looks like we’re finally moving forward,” Nugent said. “We can actually see the light at the end of the tunnel.”

A groundbreaking ceremony for the new city hall will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 7 at the new location, at the corner of Atlanta Avenue and North 12th Street.

City hall is scheduled to be completed no later than fall 2013 with the public safety complex renovation project to commence immediately thereafter and be completed no later than winter 2014, Duque said.
