The Port Arthur News
A Port Arthur man is behind bars on a $100,000 bond in connection with an aggravated robbery of a Valero store on FM 365 in Nederland.
Port Arthur Police responded to a 911 call of a robbery in progress at the Valero store to assist Nederland Police at about 8:35 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12.
While officers were in route to the location, a witness spotted the suspect running into the Shire Apartments in Port Arthur, which is located across the street from the store, according to a press release from PAPD. The witness was able to see which apartment the suspect ran into and officers arrived on scene and surrounded the apartment.
The suspect tried to leave the apartment out of the back patio door but saw officers outside and ran back into the apartment. Once inside, the suspect fired at least one shot in an unknown direction. Port Arthur Lt. Troy Lebouef said it didn’t appear the suspect was firing at the officer.
Officers ordered all of the occupants out of the apartment and took the suspect into custody and also detained two other occupants of the apartment.
Inside the apartment officers located a handgun believed to be used in the robbery as well as clothing worn by the suspect, according to police. The suspect was brought to the Jefferson County Correctional facility and booked for aggravated robbery. Further charges are pending.
While searching the apartment, officers also discovered property believed to have been taken during a burglary earlier at the Shire Apartments. That investigation is still ongoing.
Police identified the suspect as Lawrence Thomas, 21, of Port Arthur. Bond is set at $100,000, according to jail staff.
