Armed man in banana costume charged with violation of city ordinance

BEAUMONT — A man dressed in a banana costume with an AK-47 slung over his shoulder caught the attention of Beaumont motorists as well as the police Department Saturday morning.

Beaumont Police received calls at about 10 a.m. Feb. 8 from multiple people reporting the scenario in which the banana costumed man was standing near the intersection of Texas 105 and the Eastex Freeway Service Road.

Patrol officers arrived in the area, located the man, and temporarily detained him.  He was dressed in a banana costume and had an AK-47 rifle slung across his back.  The rifle had a drum magazine attached with at least a 50-round capacity.  Officers were able to determine that the young man was attempting to soliciting business for a local tactical and security store, according to a press release from BPD.

Officers cited the 18-year-old Beaumont man for violation of a city ordinance that prohibits soliciting in and alongside roadways. Officers also gathered the necessary information on the weapon and completed paperwork for consultation with the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office concerning possible future criminal charges related to his display of the firearm.
