PORT ARTHUR —
Children ages three to 13 will get a chance to learn the basics of basketball from Lamar State College-Port Arthur’s Seahawks players and coaches at the YMCA of Southeast Texas this upcoming week.
The Seahawks basketball coaches and players will be instructors at two upcoming free basketball clinics. The first clinic is for boys and girls ages three to seven to be held at 5:30 p.m. Monday. The second clinic is for boys and girls ages eight through 13 and will be held at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
LSC-PA Head Coach Lance Madison said the clinic is part of a community outreach his team participates in throughout the year and something that helps build character within his student athletes.
“It is a very rewarding experience,” Madison said. “Some of my freshmen were a little tentative at first, then as the clinic got going, you could see the positive energy.”
Students at the clinic will learn fundamentals of basketball, dribbling, passing and shooting.
“And we will stress good sportsmanship, how to be a good teammate, how to share the basketball and working well with others.”
The skills learned at the clinic are those the students can take with them off the court as well.
Pete Hicks, ceo/president of the YMCA, said this is the Y’s second year working with LSC-PA and Coach Madison.
“We had a good turnout last year,” Hicks said. “Well over 100 kids came out.”
