Fundraiser to help victims of Typhoon Haiyan

The Medical Surgical Mission of Texas is holding a fundraiser to help the victims of Typhoon Haiyan.

The event will feature fried rice and egg rolls by Rudy’s Famous Porkabobs and be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 21 at Market Basket, 2420 Nederland Ave., in Nederland.

A second fundraiser will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 28 at Walmart, 8585 Memorial Blvd., in Port Arthur.

Dr. Federico Arcala and his wife, Avila — who are heading up the fundraiser — are members of Port Arthur’s medical community. Both are among the 2,000 to 3,000 Filipinos living in the Southeast Texas area.

“There is still a need,” Dr. Federico Arcala said. “They are trying to clean the area and resettle a lot of people. At last report there were 6,000 death and another 1,800 missing.”

The typhoon struck the Philippines in November leaving death and destruction in its wake. According to the Associated Press, at least 9.7 million people in 41 Philippine provinces were affected by the disaster, with tens of thousands of houses wiped away, decomposing bodies under twisted rubble, and survivors pleading for food, water and medicine.

Donations may also be made to MSMT, P.O. Box 7959, Beaumont, Texas, 77726-7959.
