Two teens are charged with aggravated robbery of a 78-year-old Groves woman and additional charges are pending.
Austin J. Nunez-Vensel, 18, of Port Arthur, and Tanner Perron, 19, of Groves are being held in connection with the April 2 purse snatching of the elderly woman in the 3200 block of Boyd.
Justice of the Peace Nancy Beaulieu set bond at $50,000 for Nunez-Vensel and $100,000 for Perron.
Police in Groves believe the suspects were targeting elderly females who had left ATM’s or lending institutions and were believed to have cash on their person. The suspects would then follow the targeted victims and planned the theft of their purse either on site or at their residence, according to a press release from Groves City Marshal Jeff Wilmore.
“In the case of the 78-year-old Groves victim, she and a friend went to a local credit union and then were followed to Walmart,” Wilmore said in the press release. “When she left Walmart, the suspects followed her to her home and took her purse while she was unloading items from her car. They removed cash from the purse and then used the credit cards at various local businesses. During the course of the theft of the purse, she was knocked down and received bodily injury. Due to her age, injury, and the theft of the purse, the suspects were charged with aggravated robbery.”
Police believe the suspects have committed other offenses in the area and other charges are expected to be filed.
The case was solved by cooperative investigation by area police departments including the Port Arthur Police Department, Port Neches Police Department, and the Groves Police Department.
