Union authorizes strike against 2 local plants

During the summer the local union sent representatives to the United Steel Workers International Union to develop a National Oil Bargaining Policy for employees working at facilities such as those in Port Arthur. The proposal is used as a guideline combined with local issues during contract negotiations.

Hollis said normally, contract negotiations are farther along by this time of the year. The delay, he said, was one of the reasons members authorized the strike.

Union workers employed by Motiva voted earlier and did not authorize a strike, Hollis said.

“We know Motiva here has worked out local issues, and we hope the others will before it comes to a strike,” he said.

Chevron Phillips’ USW union members voted overwhelmingly for the strike authorization, union member Butch Chapman said.

Chevron Phillips representatives could not be reached at press time.
