PORT ARTHUR

Port Arthur Mayor Deloris Prince is warning residents to take caution if approached by a couple identifying themselves as city employees wanting to inspect property for hurricane related damages.

The male and female are gaining access to properties by claiming the need to inspect the property in order for FEMA to release payment for damages, according to a press release sent by the mayor’s office Wednesday afternoon.

Prince’s office has confirmed that no city officials have been authorized to do this.

Port Arthur Police Maj. John Owens said at least two residents in the Port Acres area were approached by the couple. One resident was in the process of repairing his hurricane damaged home when the couple arrived and asked permission to take photographs of the home. The homeowner allowed the photos to be taken and the couple left on foot.

The couple also approached one other address and the residents were not home at the time.

Owens said the couple could be legitimate, but should have notified the city before performing this type work.

“It’s very unusual for this to occur and we not know about it,” he said. “The police department is looking into this and officers have spoke with those residents.”

The incidents are under investigation.

If you are approached by anyone asking permission to assess your property damage, ask for identification immediately. If no ID is provided, call PAPD at 983-8600.
