Community Scoop: Groves gumbo may beautify city

The Port Arthur News

Shop and eat gumbo in Groves

Olivia Wellings wants beauty and gumbo to go together in Groves. The Groves Knights of Columbus is planning a fundraising dinner for the Groves Beautification Committee and there’s a plan behind the Sunday, Nov. 15, date. It’s designed to get everybody out during Christmas Tree Trail to the Groves Chamber of Commerce open house. Those in the holiday mood can shop, eat and shop again. Proceeds will help develop Celebration Park and other community projects in Groves.

The gumbo will be from 11 a.m to 2 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 3749 Lincoln Ave., in Groves. Lunches will be available at the KC Hall, on a dine-in or take-out basis for a donation of $6. Dinners will includes gumbo, rice and potato salad. For tickets, call 962-6175 or 749-0529.

Anayat House

A meal at Sanderson’s, 2095 U.S. 69 in Nederland, can yield proceeds for Anayat House, a non-profit group providing overnight accommodations for family members with patients in area hospitals, is celebrating its 15th anniversary with an open house from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8, at 2675 McFaddin Ave., in Beaumont’s Old Town area.

During the following times, restaurant owners will donate 15 percent of proceeds from meals served at the following times:

Crazy Jose’s, 6420 Phelan Blvd., Beaumont, 5-10 p.m., Monday, Nov. 9 (with an Anayat House flier)

Sanderson’s, 5-9 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 10

Taste of China, 955 Interstate 10, Beaumont, 4-10 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11

Sartin’s West, 2596 Calder Ave., Beaumont, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

For information, call Pat Coldewey at 833-0649.

Dell Papa Distributing seeks historical photos

Del Papa Distributing Company just announced new beverages, and has a plan to celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2010. Management hopes residents can help dig up any historic photos regarding the company’s history. Look for a year-long schedule of events, promotions, parties and donations. The campaign will tie the history of the company to the important history of the Beaumont region and the Texas Gulf Coast.
