William H. McCray, left, and Maureen Plauche, both of Sabine Pass , comfort each other at the site of the volunteer effort Saturday organized by the Greater Port Arthur Chamber of Commerce to help clean up and fix up in the community devestated by Hurricane Ike. McCray has been undergoing cancer treatments as well as dealing with the effects of Hurricane Rita and Hurricane Ike. Plauche said she has known him since she was in youth league sports and his wife was her coach.

Sabine Pass cleanup a success

Sue Lane, marketing director at Gulf Credit Union, called the experience rewarding.

“It’s the least we can do to help the community,” Lane said. “We went to Bridge City last week and to Fannett on Tuesday.”

Lane’s group included representatives from other credit unions, Southern Kitchen restaurant, The Muffler Shop and Johnny’s Wrecker Service.

The cleanup effort was organized through the Greater Port Arthur Chamber of Commerce and included groups from neighboring cities and from as far away as the Dallas/Forth Worth area.

Hurricane Ike struck the Galveston area on Sept. 13 damaging the tourist town and obliterating the coastal towns of Crystal Beach and the Boliver Peninsula with high winds and a storm surge of about 20 feet.

Closer to home, Sea Rim State Park, located just outside Sabine Pass, received a wall of water more than 20 feet high, destroying the park. The Sabine Pass area received about 15 foot of water at its doorstep.
