Council to consider raising levee, talks temporary housing

The Port Arthur News

Talk of Hurricane Ike will lead the discussion of the Port Arthur City Council meeting Tuesday, Oct. 7.

Though the hurricane levee held during the onslaught of Hurricane Ike last month, the city council will discuss a resolution to request government funds to raise the preventative structure at the regular meeting, which starts at 8:30 a.m. at city hall.

The issue was requested by Mayor Deloris “Bobbie” Prince and council member Martin Flood.

The resolution states that Ike showed “the need to augment the existing levee” and “the City of Port Arthur and Drainage District 7 have limited financial resources.”

The council will also discuss the temporary housing issue raised as a result of Hurricane Ike.

The agenda item was raised by Prince and city manager Steve Fitzgibbons.

In other city business, council members will consider approving funding of $3,000 to the Southeast Texas Economic Development Foundation for the assistance of the Regional Economic Initiative to coordinate the regional efforts of Hardin, Jefferson and Orange counties.

The council will also consider approving an ordinance approving the rates of Entergy, Texas, Inc. contained in the non-unanimous settlement filed in Entergy’s rate proceeding.

The council will be updated on Hurricane Ike recovery efforts and hear the July 2008 financial statement.
