Dennis James Sattler, a 52-year-old Port Arthur man, was indicted for the alleged murder of his estranged wife and the aggravated assault of another woman Thursday.

On July 26, Dennis Sattler allegedly shot Susan Sattler, 50, at her home. He is also charged with shooting Monica Alston, 34, a friend of Susan Sattler’s the same night at the home.

According to affidavits filed with the court, Dennis Sattler was allegedly waiting at the home in the 1300 block of S. 36th Street in Nederland when the women arrived. They did not know he was there.

The affidavit states that Susan Sattler told Alston she was going to wash her face and walked out of the room. Alston told police she then “heard a loud noise that sounded like a large firecracker” and called for her friend but got no response.

The affidavit states that Alston noticed Dennis Sattler standing in the hallway holding a large handgun and that he “fired a shot at her but missed.” According to the affidavit Dennis Sattler fired a total of three shots at Alston, hitting her once in the leg. After pleading for her life, Alston was able to run to a neighbor’s house and call for help.

Police arrived and took Dennis Sattler into custody. Susan Sattler was pronounced dead from a single gunshot wound to the head.
