Local bank helps Humane Society

— BEAUMONT — A local business is taking the initiative to help furry friends by making a donation to the Humane Society of Southeast Texas.
Wells Fargo Bank presented a check of $3,000 to the Humane Society Wednesday to help with expenses at the animal shelter.
“The humane society is one of the few organizations in dire need of funds,” Kelvin Alvarenga, Nederland branch manager said. “We wanted to contribute to inspire other corporations to assist. All of us are animal lovers.”
Alvarenga said Wells Fargo allows each branch to donate $1,000 once a year to the charity of its choice. Last year, the Nederland branch donated $1,000 to the Humane Society and two additional Beaumont branches each donated their $1,000 this year.
The Humane Society is in need of monetary donations and even begging for them. Board President Kent Schmitt said the shelter will not close its doors and officials will do everything they can to keep the shelter up and running.
Schmitt said rising gasoline prices and a struggling economy are affecting the shelter just as it is affecting Southeast Texas.
Ann Reynolds of the Humane Society said the money donated by Wells Fargo would go straight to the animals for their care.
“Y’all saved some lives today. This is the biggest lift toward the care of animals housed here. This will go for the direct care of the animals at the Humane Society,” she said.
Donations may be made to the shelter at 2050 Spindletop Rd. in Beaumont, or call 833-0504 or 722-0605. For adoption, stop by the shelter and fill out an application.
