The Nederland Independent School District Board of Trustees adopted a new Standardized Dress Code for grades 5 through 12 beginning with the 2008-2009 school year. The new Standardized Dress Code was implemented in order to reduce the number of student referrals for improper dress and to ensure students are educated in a safe non-threatening environment.
In the fall of 2008 a committee was formed consisting of parents, teachers, administrators, and students. The committee's first charge was to establish if there was a credible need for a standardized dress code. If the need was established the committee was to develop a new standardized dress code. After several months of research and discussion the committee established the need did exist and a standardized dress code was developed.
In the Spring of 2008 the Standardized Dress Code was presented to the Board of Trustees. The Board voted unanimously to adopt the new code effective at the beginning of the 2008-09 school year.
A copy of the dress code, a full color brochure with examples, and a list of frequently asked questions are available on the district web page (http:// www.nederland.k12.tx.us), any secondary campus, or the NISD administration building.
The NISD Standardized Dress Code is a very liberal interpretation of standardized dress and offers students variable options of style and color while eliminating clothing that is inappropriate for the educational setting. Acceptable lines of clothing that fall within the limits of the NISD Standardized Dress Code are available at most area major retail stores.
Any questions related to the Standardized Dress Code may be directed to Nederland Independent School District at 409-724-2391 or any NISD secondary campus.
