PORT ARTHUR

Sitting at the helm of the district for less than a week, Interim Superintendent Charles McBee will take part in his first board meeting — well, one at least that is on the other side of the bench.

McBee is a former PAISD educator and administrator with more than 40 years of experience with the district. On Thursday, he will come to the board meeting not just as an employee, but as the district’s leader.

During this meeting, McBee, along with the board of trustees, is slated to discuss issues relating to the new Memorial High School campus and the hiring of new personnel.

PAISD is awaiting the wetlands determination report necessary for architectural firm PBK to move forward with its drawings for the new high school campus, which is to be constructed on Sgt. Lucian Adams Drive and Ninth Avenue.

The board is expected to approve a proposal for this wetland determination Thursday night.

Following discussion in closed session earlier in the night, trustees are also slated to name their choice for the new head basketball coach for MHS during the open session.

News archives list the contenders for the job as former Lincoln High School basketball coach Lloyd Lamb, Beaumont Kelly coach James Knowles, MHS girls’ basketball coach Joseph Fonteneaux, Charles Thrash, an assistant on Kountze’s 2004 state championship squad, former Lincoln coach Terrul Henderson and basketball assistant coach Ron Jackson.

MHS’s most recent coach, David Green, vacated his post earlier this month and moved to Fort Bend Hightower.

Athletic Director Ronnie Thompson, MHS Principal Raymond Polk and administrators Melvin Getwood and Jimmy Wyble were appointed to make the recommendation for the next coach and present their choice to the board.

Keeping with personnel assignments, trustees are also expected to name new assistant principals during the meeting.

Thursday’s regular board meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at the Stilwell Technical Center, 4801 Ninth Avenue.
