PORT ARTHUR

Marcus Dupree is not the only organizer who would like to begin an activity center in the city of Port Arthur.

Cele Quesada, executive director of the Port Arthur Housing Authority said each of the four new affordable housing developments being built throughout the city will have a community/activity center for its residents.

“Gulfbreeze Apartments will have a community/recreational center there. It will entail educational and recreational activities. It will have a computer center with Internet for workforce access and GED programs. There will be activities for kids, young adults and the elderly. Some of the activities are basketball, volleyball and table games to keep kids active and functioning,” Quesada said.

He continued by saying the 148 townhouse development to be built at Divot’s Golf Driving Range near Texas 347 and Hogaboom Rd. will also feature an educational and recreational center with childcare partnerships. Britney Place will build 98 townhomes with a club house and exercise equipment and 100 single-family homes to be built on Ray Ave. in Port Acres with a community/recreational center.

Quesada said the current affordable housing complexes do not have recreational facilities and these centers will be key for integrating families in the community through activities, education and employment.

“We want to bring folks to the mainstream of the community through the basis of hope, opportunity and growth,” he said. “I’ve been here for five years and we’re looking at a new day for the housing authority and the programs we’re responsible for. Behind every dark cloud there’s a silver lining.”
