PORT ARTHUR

Further questions have arsien in the aftermath of the May 10 general election.

Cal Jones, District 2 Port Arthur City Councilman has requested and received a recount for the May 10 election he lost by 14 votes.

Elizabeth “Liz” Segler edged out Jones by 205 total votes and 51.77 percent compared to 191 votes cast and 48.23 percent of the total vote.

Jones received his wish and a recount shall be conducted with Premier Election Solutions’ voting machines beginning at 10 a.m. at the Robert “Bob” A. Bowers Civic Center in Port Arthur. Two representatives shall serve as poll watchers.

“In my opinion errors were made during the early voting and the election. Individual mistakes were made,” Jones said. “Only 14 votes separate Ms. Segler and me. And 34 ballots were rejected in the early voting. They were turned over to the district attorney’s office. The investigation said they were supposed to be counted. If she wins, that’s no problem. I just want to know whoever the real candidate is and I don’t want the election to be tainted.”

To Jones, the errors made were that some voters were assisted in the process of voting and it was not recorded in the application. Jones added he hasn’t retained the services of an attorney yet, but some of his friends have been in contact with attorneys and relaying information to him.

According to a statement from Acting City Secretary Terri Hanks on May 12, it was stated, “It was determined that 15 of the rejected ballots were in the District 2 councilmember race and that if counted could possibly affect the outcome of the election.”

Paul Miles, attorney with the secretary of state elections division, informed the city when the Early Voting Ballot Board rejected ballots, they cannot be opened and counted and the election could be challenged with proceedings held before a district court to make the determination if the rejected ballots could be used for counting.

“I’m an innocent bystander. I want to know where the votes went. I just want to lay my chips out and see what happens,” Jones said.
