Retired Port Arthur Police Sgt. Cedric Clayton, 74, died Wednesday, May 14.
Clayton was a member of the Port Arthur Police Department for 38 years having hired on on Dec. 18, 1961 and retiring on Aug. 31, 2000.
In his time at the PAPD Clayton worked with the Community Policing Program which was later changed to the Inter-Community Orientated Policing. He became what was probably the department’s first community relations officer.
Through the years he worked his way from a patrol officer to a detective and later a sergeant.
Clayton was a member of the force when now veteran officer Det. Ron Robertson joined the department. The two men became fast friends.
“He was the go-to man and he knew everybody,” he said. “He was well respected by us officers and the people on the street.
Funeral services for Clayton are pending at Hannah Funeral Home.
