BEAUMONT – Roses, bromeliads and herbs are usually the stars at Beaumont Botanical Gardens in Tyrrell Park. Forget the flowers … Connie Teuscher wants to show off the kitchen, the closets and even the hallways. The public is invited to the grand opening of the newly renovated Garden Center Building at Beaumont Botanical Gardens, off Fannett Road in Tyrrell Park, from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 18. Member garden clubs will provided refreshments and information tables. Private donations made this a gift to the community. Beaumont Council of Garden Clubs oversaw the construction. Council members hope the center will be “the” new place for weddings and other parties. With a clean, new look set in the midst of a glorious garden, they’ve already been booking June weddings. The gardens have been at Tyrrell Park for years. Member garden clubs tend their own sections devoted to an array of blooms. “People don’t know it’s here. It’s the best-kept secret,” Teuscher said. Those who do frequently use it as a site to arrange the bride for wedding photos. Hurricane Rita damaged the previous center building. The new one is bigger and better than ever, Teuscher said. She showed a gleaming professional kitchen and a special floral prep room. Hip-high outlets in the hall are just right for hot trays on catering carts. “We actually passed the blueprints to caterers to have a look,” Teuscher said. Visitors Sunday may view the bridal party rooms and the library, which is the nerve center during parties. There’s also a room with cabinets that are “lockers” for supplies of the different garden clubs that use the center. Teuscher suggests Sunday guests stay for a stroll around the gardens. Make sure to get a look at the waterfall and pond. Before the storm it was a natural, yet murky, home to turtles. After Rita, fallen trees turned it into a “horrible little hole.” Now clay base allows for clear, blue-green waters. A covered deck is the next goal, Teuscher said.
