Published May 14, 2008 01:55 pm - The Continuing Education Department at Lamar State College-Port Arthur will present its annual “Discovery” program June 23-27 for area students entering fifth, sixth or seventh grade in the fall. Lamar State-PA 'Discovery' program begins June 23 The Port Arthur News The Continuing Education Department at Lamar State College-Port Arthur will present its annual “Discovery” program June 23-27 for area students entering fifth, sixth or seventh grade in the fall.
The program offers the students a week of hands-on enrichment courses on topics ranging from basketball to computers and music to Spanish. Classes meet from 1 to 4:30 p.m. each day, with students attending two classes. The classes are kept to a maximum of 15 students and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. The cost of the program is $100, which includes all supplies, a T-shirt and a drink each day. Instructors are Lamar-Port Arthur faculty and staff members, teachers from area school districts and community members with expertise in the topics being presented. The classes include tours and hands-on activities. The Game Programming class helps students learn to program simple games that can be played on computers. The Fun with Physics class helps students learn the basic principles of physics. Other classes offered this year include A Taste of Music, Art 101, Basketball, Clay Sculpting, Computer Animation, Junior Chefs, “Krafty Kreations” (arts and crafts), Science Explorers, Scrapbooks and Stamping, Spanish and Woodcrafters. “Discovery 2008” also features classes such as “Models Inc.,” Publishing Wizards, Police Academy and “A Step Back in Time,” in which students study the history of Port Arthur. Individuals, businesses and organizations in the area contribute to the success of the Discovery program by donating money to provide scholarships for students who otherwise would not be able to participate in the program.
