Published May 10, 2008 11:23 pm - Lofton, George win PAISD trustee seats SHERRY KOONCE The Port Arthur News PORT ARTHUR — Port Arthur voters elected two new members to the district’s board of trustees Saturday.
Kenneth Lofton received the most votes with 1,206, or 66.59 percent. Mary Jean George received 988 votes, or 54.56 percent of the vote to win the second at-large board seat. Julia Samuels received 320 or 17.67 percent of the vote while Charlie Lewis, Jr. received 297 votes, or 16.40 percent. Lofton, an employee with the U.S. Postal Service and community service volunteer, said he was thrilled to have been elected to the school board seat. “I’m happy I won and glad people got out and voted for me,” Lofton said. “I am going to continue doing what I am doing in the community and continue working with the superintendent and other board members and make it a successful school district. I would like to thank my family and friends for coming out and supporting me.” George, a former college professor and past PAISD school board member, said she wanted to thank voters for putting their faith and trust in her. “I look forward to working with the board and the administrators and teachers, parents and the whole community to make our schools better,” George said. “I think we have a real opportunity now to move forward and look toward the positives in this district and the positives with our people in this district,” George said.
