Radio living legends and pioneers honored by Port Arthur City Council By David Ball The Port Arthur News PORT ARTHUR — Michael “Shane” Sinegal, 50, Mayor Pro Tem of the Port Arthur City Council said at Wednesday’s regular meeting he remembers how music from the 1960s influenced him and formed him into the man he is today.
“My first influence was KJET and later Soul Train. And then KALO (1250) came along and blew me away,” he said. Sinegal made his comments in reference to five living legends of radio that were honored by the city council — Brother Tudy Duriso, Brother Gerald Lobe, Sister Cynthia Jackson, D.L. Powell and Oscar “King Leo” Jones were present at the meeting. Others not present but named in the proclamation include: Brother Glen Allen, Jay More, Lloyd “L.J.” Jones, Tom “The Blues Man” Hunter, Sharon Perkins, Pete and Rita Zydeco Show, General Manager Ron Mathis, Mona “Zydeco Queen” Wilson and Poppa The Zydeco Rocker. Sinegal called them “celebrities” and “institutions.” Duriso told of the good times they would have at the old station on Gulfway Dr. and Texas 73 and revisited the old station yesterday. “It’s an honor (to be name by the council) and it’s like a class reunion or a family reunion. The old station had a lot of old memories. It was a lot of fun,” Duriso said. Mayor Deloris “Bobbie” Prince proclaimed the week of May 12-18 as KALO — 1250 AM, the voice of Southeast Texas/Southwest La. the end of an era. June is Black Music Month and KJET was the only Black oriented station between Houston and New Orleans for many years and they were even honored by President Richard Nixon.
