Prayer service will honor Texaco Oklahoma sailors

By Darragh Doiron
The Port Arthur News

Mattie J. Dorsey reports that The Rev. Oubre Sinclair will conduct a prayer service and reception for the Remembrance of the souls lost on the Texaco Oklahoma.

The tanker sunk at sea in 1971. About 40 crew members were killed at sea. The service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 27, at the Seafarer’s Center, 401 Houston Ave.

Barbecue and finger prints

Pastor Joy Richards says her congregation is excited about the Aldersgate Trinity United Methodist Church, Operation ID finger child finger printing and barbecue event, set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 29, at 3600 Memorial Blvd. Children's Safety is the theme.

“The Port Arthur Police Department will be helping us. They will fingerprint the children,” she said. “The parents will leave with a copy of their child's fingerprints. While we hope that safety measure will never be needed by the family, it is a good thing to have with important paperwork, in case it is needed. Call 985-8861 for details.

Groves gumbo

The community is coming together to support Susie New, a Groves water department employee who has cancer. A chicken and sausage gumbo dinner with potato salad and tea will sell for $6 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 27, at the Courtyard Cafe, 4321 Lincoln Ave.

All donations are appreciated, Debbie Snell said.

Cockrell production in Beaumont

If you love director Keith Cockrell’s work in Port Arthur, consider a trip to see the Beaumont Community Players’ production of "Our Country's Good" on its final weekend, Friday, March 28, and Saturday, March 29. Call 833-4664 for tickets.

Set in Sydney, Australia in 1788-1789, it is a story about convicts who are offered a bit of humanity and culture by participating in a production of a play. The show was the 1988 Olivier Award winner for best new play in England.
