Community Scoop! Civic Center flys open in August

Civic Center to fly back open in August

Director of the Robert A. “Bob” Bowers Civic Center, Adam Saunders, said Thursday that the center is entering its final phase of reconstruction after being closed since Hurricane Rita blew through town. The center will have its grand opening in early September, although no specific date has been set.

Saunders said the inside of the building is brand new and completely redesigned. The calendar of events is already filling up, which shows how much the area needs the Civic Center, he said.

The first two events will come in August, including a bird show on Aug. 18 and 19.

Ned nursery partners with ‘Friends’ for PA library makeover

The Friends of the Port Arthur Public Library announced Thursday that they recently completed the landscaping project now seen around the library grounds.

After several months of contacting local nurseries and landscapers, three local companies presented their designs to the group's board of directors. The final decision was given to the library directors, and Cook's Nursery in Nederland was chosen for the job.

Besides beds of plants and palm trees, several benches and a bird bath have been installed, giving patrons a place to sit and enjoy the view. The group hopes that all citizens will drive by and stop to enjoy the sight provided by The Friends of the Library, which conducts fundraising for items and programs not provided for by the regular budget of the library. For information on joining the organization, call 982-6223 or 985-8838, ext. 33.

Rumor is ... you can get fit on Thomas Blvd.

Justice of the Peace Bob Morgan recently told a News’ staffer that all that construction happening on Thomas Boulevard is paving the way for a new bike and walk trail. Hopefully, the trails will be complete in time for a crisp autumn stroll.

LifeShare says thanks to local blood donors

In a letter to News’ writer Amy Moore, LifeShare Donor Resources Coordinator Jamie Lombardo said LifeShare’s 65th Anniversary drive was a “huge success.”
