Ronald Spooner's recent guest editorial concerning our "Traveling Trustee" Julia Samuels was a little confusing. It was difficult to tell if he was trying to defend Samuels, blame others, or make the case that her "double dipping" didn't make any difference. Mr. Spooner pointed out the money spent by board president Samuels would have little impact on education in the district. He misses the point.
Julia Samuels continues to show where her priorities are. Samuels charged the district to make herself personalized stationery and has spent more on travel than any two other board members combined. She spent six days visiting in Chicago for a three-day conference. She rented a car on Saturday for a conference in Houston on Monday. While these things may have little impact on the overall education of our children, they are a clear indication of where she places her priorities.
The hypocrisy of Samuels, who professes only to be concerned with the education of children, is gradually being revealed. Recently, as president of the board, she proudly proclaimed the opening of the new DeQueen Elementary. I am certain she did not mention at this great public event that she fought as hard as she could to defeat the very bond issue which allowed building this school.
Julia Samuels should pay back the money she used and resign.
