I was driving west on highway 69, and I saw something that really took my attention.
I noticed a little paved road, to me what looks like a road that just goes nowhere. There is a sign that directs people to that little road. That sign says, “Staff Sergeant Lucian Adams Drive.” Two tenths of a mile past that sign is another and it reads, “Jimmy Johnson Blvd.” Now this road is curb/gutter/four lane boulevard. I suppose its probably one of the nicest streets in Port Arthur. This street goes right down the best part of Port Arthur. Now if you don’t know where I am going with this, you should surely read on.
Sgt. Lucian Adams is a hero. World War II medal of honor winner. Not to mention all the other awards that he received for what this man gave to this country. He was a man of great honor.
I am sure Jimmy Johnson is a fine fellow, a football player, coach and I am sure a millionaire. Yes, he is from Port Arthur, but so is Janis Joplin. Port Arthur has a party each year in honor of Janis Joplin. It is a fact and a shame and a disgrace for Port Arthur to name a back road in honor of such a man as Sgt. Lucian Adams.
I feel that it is shameful and disgraceful and I am personally ashamed of this. To think, it took a long time just to name a back road for this war hero.
I don’t know about you, but I feel that something is wrong with what I am talking about here. Or, is it just that Port Arthur is not a patriotic town, putting a veteran on the bottom shelf. I feel that it is a slap in the face to veterans. God bless Port Arthur for it is in great need of it, it always has put its pride only in football. It is sad. A town with the wrong kind of pride.
