PORT ARTHUR
—
With smooth island beats and old fashioned country crooning, the Barefoot Man and Cayman Cowboy are back in Port Arthur for the annual Cayman Night festivities.
After what they described as a long wait at the customs gate, Barefoot Man, also known as George Novak, and Cayman Cowboy, Andy Martin, returned for another year of island punch, floral shirts and flip flops.
Cayman Night in Port Arthur will begin at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, July 19 at the Robert A. “Bob” Bowers Civic Center. It’s there that Barefoot Man and the Cayman Cowboy will take center stage.
The duo of musical talent has been coming to the event that celebrates Port Arthur’s sister city relationship with the Cayman Islands for nearly 25 years. Each year, they say, it gets bigger and better.
“We’ll see Saturday if it’s gotten bigger or if it’s the same,” Barefoot said. “It’s interesting, it’s fun. We enjoy it. We look forward to this.”
The Germany born Barefoot Man, who’s called Cayman home since 1971, said coming to Port Arthur each year gives him and Cowboy the opportunity to see faces of friends they haven’t seen in years.
“It’s nice and a very warm, friendly type of thing,” he said. “The people that you run into here are people from more or less the old days - you know, from when we all were starting our career in music or whatever and they lived here (Cayman).”
Both men say the southern hospitality found in Southeast Texas is something other areas don’t offer when they perform.
“Port Arthur’s Cayman Night is much different than other concerts,” Barefoot said. “Actually I prefer this.”
In the year since the Caymanians were last in the area, both men have released new albums — although their tastes are on opposite ends of the spectrum.
