NEDERLAND — Today, May 20, is the release date of “Today,” Mike Zito’s latest release.
The title song is about “waking up” and “accepting” life right now.
“You must be present to win,” the Nederland man said with a laugh.
With four children, he said he’s always working on patience and tolerance. And, as his song suggests, he sometimes needs “help from above.”
“You’ve got to realize everybody’s got their own world out there, even the little children. We’re living in it,” he said.
He calls his music rock, “kind of punk,” and “bluesy.” He’s got a tattoo about the blues, and another with the St. Louis Gateway Arch, since St. Louis is where he began his life.
Zito worked at music stores in the Dallas area and now he and his wife, Laura, call Nederland home. She is a teacher and he plays the music with his band. He also strums with children Zach, 13; Riley, 7; Sam, 6; and Sophie, 1. Some of the gang are learning to play and the others are grabbing the microphone.
“We play just for fun. To me, it’s the most thing to do,” Zito said. “I don’t push it on them at all.”
Zito’s own music and a softer version of “Little Red Corvette” than Prince offers are among selections on “Today.” This is Zito’s first work with a label, Electo Groove. He’s headed off on a six-week tour to begin in Austin and include a House of Blues gig in Los Angeles.
While local fans may have heard Zito play at Crockett Street and The Handlebar, they’ll have to wait until August to hear him locally again. Meanwhile, “Today” is available at www.mikezito.com,” online from Target and at stores such as Barnes & Noble.
