Bridge City High School students Ryan Cormier, 16, and Hunter Pickard, also 16, were fishing Wednesday night when they witnessed a woman’s car enter the Neches River. The teens were successful in alerting emergency personnel of the accident just seconds after Essence Hillbring’s car entered the water.

BC teens’ quick thinking proves heroic

BRIDGE CITY — Two Bridge City teens have become overnight heroes.

Ryan Cormier and Hunter Pickard, both 16, said they were fishing about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Neches River — just north of the Rainbow Bridge — when they heard a loud noise and a woman screaming.

The two Bridge City High School students were bow-hunting for gar when they witnessed the tires blowout on a 1990 Lincoln Town Car driven by an Orange woman. The Town Car was traveling south on Highway 87 when a driver’s side tire blew out, reportedly causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle.

According to Cormier, the vehicle spun around before plunging rear first into the water. “She was screaming ... big time,” Cormier said.

The driver of the Lincoln, Essence Hillbring, was able to grab her two small children, who were passengers in the car, and safely get out of the vehicle before it was fully submerged by the water, according to the Bridge City Police Department.

Hillbring and her children were reportedly not injured in the accident.

Pickard said he quickly reached for his cell phone to call 911 as soon as he saw the vehicle hit the water.

The teens were about 100 yards out in the river when the accident occurred, but said they quickly revved up the motor on their 16-foot aluminum bass boat and headed to shore. When the boys reached the scene, they said they attempted to help the woman and her children. The pair noted, however, Hillbring seemed to have the situation under control as they waited for emergency personnel to arrive.

“I told her I was really proud of her for getting the kids out so quickly,” Cormier said.

Once emergency personnel arrived, the two teens also assisted in getting the vehicle out of the water.

According to Robbie Rider of Gilbeaux’s Wrecker Service, Cormier and Pickard connected chains from their boat to the vehicle so it could be pulled from the water.

“We’re just glad she’s okay,” Cormier said about the victim and his actions to help her.
