Groves policemen attacked

GROVES — Kemon Jermaine Reed, 26, was arrested Tuesday evening on three charges of aggravated assault on a public servant after three officers were injured while attempting to make an arrest.

At 6:14 p.m., officers responded to a call in reference to threats at an apartment complex in the 5300 block of Gulfway Drive.

A man was reported to have been threatening his ex-girlfriend. Approaching the situation, officers were aware of the man’s criminal history, which includes the fact that he was out on bond for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon involving his ex-girlfriend and that he had outstanding warrants in Port Arthur.

The officers knocked on the door and when Reed answered, the officers informed Reed of his outstanding warrants and their intention to arrest him. The officers reported that Reed said he wasn’t going to jail and attacked the officers, allegedly striking them in their faces with his fists. The officers used the Taser to maintain control of the situation and another officer was able to take Reed to the ground.

The officers required immediate medical attention and later an emergency room exam and X-rays. Reed did not sustain any injuries and was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Brad Burnett. Bond was set at $100,000 for each count of assault on a public servant. Reed was transported to the Jefferson County Correctional Facility where he was booked and jailed on the third degree felony charges. The Groves Police Department is also investigating additional charges against Reed for retaliation and threatening his girlfriend.

All of the officers are expected to make a full recovery from their injuries.
