Groves could gain new park

GROVES — City leaders in Groves are eyeing a piece of property that could one day become a city park.

The property, currently owned by Huntsman and located at Hogaboom Road and Wilson Street, features a sprinkling of trees and some cattle and could one day be home to ball fields and playground equipment. In order to facilitate the acquisition of the 22-plus acres of land Groves City Council approved entering into an agreement with Griffith Moseley Johnson and Associates Inc. for a price not to exceed $400. Pat Avery, now with the consulting firm, spent most of her career working with industry.

City Manager D. Sosa feels there needs to be more activities available for youth.

“You have to have programs to keep youth busy,” Sosa said.

The property would feature baseball and softball fields, a walking track and a playground. The city would provide the facilities and build the fields then work with different groups such as Little League’s who will in turn maintain the fields.

Councilmembers discussed the possibility of acquiring the property 10 to 12 years ago, he said. The reason city leaders are revisiting the issue is that they must find park property to replace Lindenmayer Park. In 2006 voters overwhelmingly approved allowing the city to sell the park. An auto body shop now sits where a portion of the park once stood and more acreage will change hands in the future.

The city hopes to have the land donated to them or leased for a minimal amount.

Groves is also eyeing a second piece of property that’s within the city but owned by Port Arthur Independent School District. Sosa and Mayor Brad Bailey are scheduled to speak to PAISD trustees during the district’s meeting on Thursday regarding the lease of land at the site of the former Sims School.
