Diaz named Groves Father of the Year

GROVES — Alfredo Diaz was taking a well deserved nap when he was awoken by his wife, Christina, on Tuesday.

A group of visitors were at the door with a gift and the news that he had been selected as Groves Father of the Year. His oldest daughter Yasmin, 14, had penned a letter from the heart nominating him.

“My hero is not Superman or Wonder Woman. He doesn’t have magic or super powers but what he does have is courage,” Yasmin Diaz said in her letter. “My father is not the most powerful but he is the most loving and caring father ever. He doesn’t sit at home and relax, he strives his best to support my family with whatever he can. If he has to work form dawn to dusk, he’ll do it.”

Diaz, a Mexican-American who came to the U.S. from Mexico, is described as a hard worker who had a new home built in Groves for his family.

Christina Diaz said she encouraged her daughter to write the letter nominating Alfredo, a truck driver.

Other family members gathered in the kitchen and watched as the newly named Groves Father of the Year accepted his honor.

“I am very happy for my son-in-law. He’s done a lot for his family financially and with their schooling and activities,” Dolores Flores said. “He’s a sweetheart.”
