Groves to get new community watch signs

GROVES — Criminals beware, Groves residents are looking out for each other.

The City of Groves will soon receive 200 new and updated community watch signs courtesy of BASF and Total. These new, larger signs will be placed in every neighborhood in the city as well as along major thoroughfares, Groves City Manager D. Sosa said.

The city’s previous signs featured the Sabina Petrochemicals logo but since Sabina no longer exists and the signs were getting old city leaders discussed the idea of an update to the signs.

“BASF and Total graciously offered to pay for the signs,” Sosa said.

The Groves Police Department had a hand in designing the new signs.

“It is more visible to the eye and to me it stands out brighter than the old signs,” Groves Police Lt. Kirk Rice, who helped design the new signs, said. “The main reason we are changing out the signs is to catch the attention of the crook on the street and make them realize we do have an organized group that is watching out for its neighbors.”

Sosa said the new signs go along with the city’s goal to protect the peace and dignity of the neighborhoods as well as giving residents an opportunity to call police if they see suspicious activity.

“This goes hand in hand with what we’ve been trying to do for the past 10 years,” he said. “To make the city safer, stronger and make Groves a really nice place to live.”

Sosa believes the plan is working.

“We have seen great, great improvement in those areas,” he said. “The crime rate is down, neighborhoods are cleaner and safer and the city is growing.”

Residents have a chance to meet with police and speak about their concerns during the Groves Police City-Wide Community Watch Program meeting. The meetings are held at 6 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month at the Groves Activity Building, 6150 39th St. At the end of each meeting residents are encouraged to ask questions and voice concerns in an open forum.

To report suspicious activity in Groves call the police department at 962-0244.
