Hurricane Readiness Tips from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
Being fully prepared for a disaster includes knowing to evacuate early to avoid being caught in traffic. Take important documents, refill prescriptions, food for special diets, changes of clothing, toys and books for children and adequate care of pets.
When a hurricane watch is issued:
— Tune to broadcasts on TV, radio or NOAA Weather Radio concerning a storm's progress.
— Plan your escape route early by consulting up-to-date hurricane evacuation routes.
— Find a pet-friendly hotel and plan on taking pets with you if you evacuate. Because emergency shelters do not admit pets, call hotels in a safe location to see if they admit pets during disasters.
— Fuel and service your vehicle.
— Gather blankets, sleeping bags, flashlights, candles or lamps, matches, a portable radio, fresh batteries, first-aid kit, special dietary and other non-perishable foods and containers for drinking water.
— Clean the bathtub for possible use to hold water for cleaning.
— Gather prescription medicines, eyeglasses, hearing aids, infants needs, lightweight folding chairs and emergency phone numbers.
— Get cash. ATMs and banks may not be open after the storm.
— Photograph your pet and keep the photo for identification purposes.
— Protect your property. If you have time to act: Buy emergency repair items such as masking tape, plywood, lumber, plastic sheeting, sandbags and sand.
— Keep all receipts for insurance or tax purposes.
— Consider insurance claims. Know the name ofyour agency and company. Also, unless they are stored in a safe place, take insurance policies, an inventory of possessions - including receipts and photos or videos - and other valuable papers with you, if you evacuate, to speed up claims processing.
When a warning is issued:
— Close all windows
— Cover large windows with storm shutters or plywood panels — use tape on small windows.
— Brace garage doors, external doors and close interior doors.
— Move loose yard items indoors and secure television antennas.
— Remove loose and dead branches from trees and shrubbery.
— Move boats and trailers to garages or warehouses or tie down next to house.
— Fill clean bathtub and containers with fresh water.
— Check and strengthen mooring lines of boats still in water.
— Drain swimming pools at least halfway to reduce chances of flooding.
— Check your tie-downs if you live in a mobile home.
— Unplug major appliances.
— Turn refrigerator and freezer to coldest setting and open only if necessary.
Remember your pets
If you and your pet cannot stay together, call friends, family members, veterinarians, or boarding kennels in a safe area to arrange safe foster care.
Have supplies on hand. Be sure too pack a week's worth offood, water, medication, cat litter, or any other supplies your pet needs on a regular basis.
Leave early. If there's an evacuation order and rescue officials come to your door, they may riot allow you to take your pets with you.
When there's an evacuation order
— Comply with the order.
— Tell a friend or family member outside the warning area that you are evacuating and where you plan to stay.
— Lock windows and doors and turn off all utilities.
— Leave immediately and follow evacuation routes.
— Transport your pet safely. Use secure pet carriers and keep your pet on a leash or in a harness. Maintain trailers for large animals in good working condition.
