St. Pierre seeking revenge against Serra in Montreal
David Estrada, Jr MMA column for Sunday, April 13
The Port Arthur News
The most anticipated bout of the year up to this point is taking place next Saturday. Georges St. Pierre will be looking for revenge from the man who took his title in Houston one year ago this week.
UFC 83: Matt Serra vs. St. Pierre II will take place in St. Pierre's home country of Canada.
St. Pierre is an absolute superstar north of the border. The 21,000 seat Bell Center in Montreal, Quebec sold out just minutes after tickets went on sale to the public. It was the fastest selling event in UFC history according to UFC president, Dana White.
UFC 77 last fall was billed as "UFC 77: Hostile Territory" as Anderson Silva faced Rich Franklin in Franklin's hometown of Cincinnati. UFC 83 could be billed as "UFC 83: Territoire Hostile" as Serra enters St. Pierre's hometown.
Coincidently, "Territoire Hostile" is the name of the dark and gloomy entrance song that St. Pierre enters the arena to. Rest assured that the Long Islander, Serra, will be feeling the hostility as he hears the presence of over twenty thousand French-Canadian fans rooting against him.
Stylewise, Georges St. Pierre has an advantage on Serra at pretty much every aspect of the fight game except submissions. Serra is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt under the venerable Renzo Gracie. St. Pierre isn't too shabby either. He has a Brazilian jiu-jitsu brown belt, also under Renzo Gracie.
St. Pierre has Serra handily when it comes to size, speed, wrestling and striking. This doesn't explain why Serra utterly destroyed GSP with a barrage of punches in Houston in one of the greatest upsets in MMA history.
Most people including the oddsmakers, feel GSP will get his revenge on Serra. The only question is how.
Some people speculate that St. Pierre will exact his revenge on Serra rather brutally to send a message that the first encounter was a fluke. Serra is focused and confident as he was for the first bout. Could lightning strike twice?
This will be a captivating main event to say the least due to the many elements involved.
There's two other intriguing bouts that stand out in the televised main card of the event. One will feature Michael "The Count" Bisping's first foray into the UFC middleweight division as he faces Charles "Captain Miserable" McCarthy.
The other is a match-up between two fighters who lay defeated in the wake of Anderson Silva, Travis Lutter vs. Rich Franklin. Should Franklin win this middleweight bout it will make him close to being a contender again.
However, after losing to Anderson Silva twice handily, there's clearly a glass ceiling for him. It would be difficult for the UFC to promote a third fight between the Silva and Franklin.
Lutter actually may have a better chance at Silva should he defeat Franklin. Lutter is one of the only fighters to ever capture a single round over Silva in the UFC.
Some clarification from last week's column. The article mentioned it seems that fights aired on free television are stopped by referees more quickly than fights on pay per view. There may be a motive behind it.
