Feeling like Hole in One Calimari or Par 5 Juicy Blue Cheese Burgers? Finish up with Nothin’ But Fairway Fruit Crisp.
Future residents of the homes being built by The Patch golf course in Groves may want to bag a copy of “I’d Rather Be Grilling: A Golfer’s Cookbook” by Clint and Michelle Mobley.
Imagine finishing a round and sharing Gimme Another Buffalo Wings with friends. The rub for a 2-pound bag of wings and drummettes calls for 2 tablespoons paprika, 2 tablespoons brown sugar and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper. Coat in a sauce made with a 12-ounce bottle of Louisiana hot sauce and a stick of melted butter.
Little tins of “I’d Rather Be Grilling” rub in spicy chipotle and sweet ginger garlic flavored onions I cooked in the oven. I got addicted to them before I ever tried them on meat.
Going organic
Every day should be Earth Day. If you go out of your way to find the best produce, try these organic gardening techniques for perfect picking:
Corn: Puncture a kernel with your fingernail. If a milky fluid flows out, it’s time. If the liquid is like toothpaste, the corn is over mature. Silk should be brown.
Cucumbers: Cut from vine when cukes are a deep green and seeds are still soft.
Potatoes: Dig spuds when the vines die back.
Tomatoes: Harvest at full color. An overripe tomato quickly loses its firmness. Never put them in the refrigerator.
Watermelon: Pick when the tendril closest to the fruit’s stem withers and the belly turns cream to yellowish.
Mr. Krispers and me
I met Mr. Krispers last Monday, during National Women’s Nutrition Week. I was attracted to his heart healthy whole grains, his sea salt and pepper spiciness and his ultra-thin physique.
You get a whopping 37 pieces of Mr. Krispers Baked Rice Krisps in a delicious serving. I let a junk food junkie try one to see if my desires for Mr. Krispers were misplaced, but she also approved of his wheat and gluten-free goodness. I’ll be looking for his friends: White Cheddar & Herb, Sundried Tomato & Basil, Barbeque, Sour Cream & Onion and Nacho.
Mr. Chips, don’t expect me back soon. I’m with Krispers.
More Moscato
If Barefoot Wine’s casual title and logo doesn’t grab you, maybe the term “affordable” will. What’s new this spring for the award-winning California winery is a Moscato with flavors of peach, apricot, lemon and orange citrus.
What do you do with it? Go Barefoot with spicy Asian cuisine, light desserts, fresh fruit and mild cheeses. You don’t have to be a wine snob to enjoy a glass of this refreshing blend. It’s like art. I don’t know much, but I know what I like.
Like this: A portion of Moscato proceeds will go to the Surfrider Foundation, a grassroots, not-for-profit environmental organization dedicated to the protection of the world's oceans, waves and beaches.
Revisited
Some new products mentioned here before have updated editions, such as Wholemato’s first Spicy Organic Agave Ketchup, which I like even better than the original. Agave nectar and jalapenos flavor this blend that’s more healthy than the “hot cappy” my little girl used to mix up for her fries. We all make better food choices now. It is certified as low-glycemic for diabetics, comes in a no-leach glass bottle and is gluten free.
Healthy Hemp: I told readers I enjoyed Manitoba Harvest Hemp Bliss milk. Now you can pour a glass of the Canadian company’s unsweetened version with just four ingredients: filtered water, organic hemp seeds, sea salt and xanthan gum. Don’t be one of those folks who fear new and healthy foods. Start easy with the chocolate version. I’ll bet you’ll get a craving by the third sample. Call me and let me know.
Be Well Red Teas: I don’t even need a sip of Get Smart, with cranberry and orange peel, to remember and focus that I’ve bragged on this line of Republic of Tea blends before. Cool tins with edgy advice and just-right blends of everything good go into these tea bags. Maybe you don’t know offhand that sage ginger will help a scratchy throat, so trust Be Well’s Get Soothed to mix it up for you.
Even seeing the yellow label on Get Happy herb tea for “lifting your spirit” makes you want to sing some Judy Garland tunes. Sip that lemon balm blend and you’ll lift your voice, too.
