GROVES — Seafood and steak lovers need not travel all the way to Houston or Beaumont for a taste of Baytown Seafood, just go to Groves.

Baytown Seafood opened its newest location, 4830 Twin City Highway, last week and has already had a steady line of customers.

And even as contractors worked to transform the former Jivin’ Java restaurant into a seafood restaurant, there was one group of Sunday drivers who would stop by faithfully and ask “when are you going to open?”

Baytown Seafood has the same owners as its other restaurants in Beaumont and Houston (next to Reliant Stadium). The Groves location is a sister to the others.

Former Austin resident Marvin Reese, professional chef and one of the cooks at the restaurant, brings with him years of experience and a love for cooking. One of the best compliments he has received was about a sampler platter. The customer noticed that the shrimp has its own distinctive seasoning as did the oysters and fish.

“We cook to the proper degree, until the food is done to perfection but not overdone,” Reese said. “There is a consistency in our products. You can eat here then go to the Houston restaurant and eat and it will taste the same.”

The family owned and operated business sports lightly colored walls and decorative effects such as a fishing net and nautical items. Condiments such as Tabasco Sauce and Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce are on the table ready for use and other condiments are not far away.

The owners are currently working on a banquet room for use by large parties or for overflow seating. Currently, the restaurant can seat about 100 people and the capacity will go higher when the room is completed.

As the conversation progressed, several plates of food were brought out for display and sampling: fried shrimp and fish, shrimp gumbo and a plate of grilled shrimp and grilled fish served with Cajun wild rice and grilled green zucchini and yellow squash.
