Come in “Sunday casual” for folk dancing, dhamma talks and dinner serving “nothing with a face.”
With a saw’s buzz in the background disrupting the usual tranquility of the gardens and temple grounds, Danny Dubuisson, with temple community relations, noted a bit of remodeling with doors and “this and that.”
Members are preparing Buu Mon Buddhist Temple to host Le Vu Lan, also known as Parent’s Day or Ullmbana, from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 24 at the temple, 2701 Procter St.
“We get a pretty good turn out. We should see people come in from Houston and possibly Dallas. Monks from various temples are coming in from Houston to share with us in the event,” Dubuisson said.
Guests also include Mid-County residents who want to experience temple festivities.
“We have had some local interest from the local people who just want to see what the ceremony is about. All are welcome,” he said.
Mike Wise will speak on mothers and Joni Villemez-Comeaux will speak on fathers.
On this day Buddhists offer prayers to departed relatives and honor their living parents and elders with prayers and special attention. It is generally believed that anyone who performs any good deed accumulates spiritual merit. It is considered an even more pious act when the merits earned are shared with the departed relatives. Sharing the merits help them to be reborn in more favorable conditions and to alleviate suffering, according to temple material.
The schedule is:
• 9:30 a.m. — A Rose for Your pocket
• 10:30 a.m. — Chanting and praying
• 11 a.m. — Dhamma talk by monks
• 11:45 a.m. — folk dancing by Buu Mon Temple Cultural Performance Youth Group
