C.O. Wilson students visit Washington, D.C.

The Port Arthur News

A group of 39 students and chaperones from C.O. Wilson Middle School had the chance to visit Washington, D.C. and toured numerous historical sites.

Students participated in an essay writing contest to see which youth would be honored to lay the wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The students selected included: Kanton Richard, Victoria Martinez and Claire Culver.

Among some of the memorials the students saw were the Lincoln Memorial, Korean Memorial, Vietnam Memorial, Einstein Statue, Iwo Jima Memorial, U.S. Air Force Memorial, Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, National Archives, Peterson House, Smithsonian Museums and the Jefferson Memorial.

Rep. Ted Poe set up a tour of the capitol and spent an hour talking to students about current issues. U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison arranged a White House tour for the group. Students also enjoyed tours of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, Mount Vernon, National Cathedral and the Holocaust Museum. The group was one of 10 groups selected to observe the Twilight Tattoo in honor of the Army’s 233 year anniversary.

The sponsor for the trip was Becky Thompson.
