Goyo’s reopens Monday at downtown location By Sherry Koonce The Port Arthur News By Sherry Koonce The News staff writer Goyo’s restaurant in downtown Port Arthur reopens Monday with a healthy helping of down home cooking. There’s something on the menu for everyone — from the hungriest of appetites to those counting calories. At it’s 711 Procter St. address, owner Gregory Flores said since the business closed in 2005 after Hurricane Rita, he has been inundated with requests to reopen. “They were hungry down there. There was no place to eat downtown,” Flores said. The onetime Guarantee Shoe Store which Flores refurbished into a downtown diner sustained hurricane damage — everything inside had to be cleaned and all the food thrown away. Flores said he was disheartened since the restaurant had not been open that long before the storm, and just now, because so many asked him, has decided to reopen. “After all this time, all the sudden it was just time to do it,” Flores said. The restaurant will feature a breakfast and lunch menu, with many items available on the steam table. All food is cooked fresh on the premises by a new cook, Flores said. Those eating breakfast can choose from old-timey biscuits and gravy, has browns, eggs and bacon, grits, etc. The lunch menu features all the down-home favorites: beef or pork roast, chicken fried steak, meat loaf, and a big mouth-watering hamburger. Fresh, homemade gumbo will be on the menu everyday. For lighter fare, the restaurant offers a bountiful salad selection and plenty of fresh vegetables to choose from.
