PORT NECHES — Some retirees set out to start their own businesses after leaving their jobs. What is even more challenging is being retired and running a business out of your home.

Becky and Kyle Bowser left their “highly stressful jobs” a year ago when both were 49 with nearly 40 years of combined experience. She worked as a purchaser and production scheduler at GE Water in Orange and Beaumont. He left Chevron Phillips Chemical in Port Arthur as an accountant.

Kyle was ready to do something different, so they decided together as a team and “jumped off together.”

“We did what we wanted to do,” Becky said. “We took off six months doing nothing. We retired last March. The business began in August 2007 and hasn’t gotten off of the ground yet, but I think there’s a market. I’m trying to be patient.”

She added that Kyle’s “plate is full” working as an H&R Block tax consultant and the treasurer at First United Methodist Church in Port Neches.

B&B Solutions has a “Video Keepsakes” business where four different wedding video options displayed along with organizational tools provided as part of a Video Keepsakes package. Becky can also compile custom slideshows from clients’ photographs and home video for anniversaries, retirements, graduations, dances, school reunions, family reunions, sports teams and athletes. Becky calls it an affordable alternative to videography.

They also offer “Silk Settings” — table decor in a variety of themes, providing setup and removal of centerpieces for all types of events. The business also offers custom database design, business plan development, computer training and free initial consultation.

“It’s kind of like a Web for the small business owner who is passionate about their work. We offer them some tools for tasks they may not want to do. Or maybe they can’t afford a clerk, this will give them the tools they need,” Becky said.

“Kyle is my soundboard. We are a team He is so supportive,” she said. “You’re not really busier at retirement because if you’re excited, you’ll drive yourself. I worked until midnight the other night on something. I love having my business here at home. And I can just carry my laptop and be portable.”
