PORT ARTHUR — KFDM reported on its website early Saturday morning that its news anchor Bill Leger had died in a traffic accident.

Leger was driving south on Louisiana 93 north of Scott, La., around 1 a.m. Saturday when his vehicle failed to negotiate a curve. His car then ran off the road to the right and overcorrected, causing the vehicle to overturn and come to a rest in the northbound lane. Another vehicle traveling north on Louisiana 93 struck Leger’s vehicle.

“It’s devastating to whole KFDM family but especially to his wife and daughter,” said David Lowell, KFDM news director. “We’re all grieving right now.”

Leger was a reporter and anchor at KFDM for nearly two decades, covering everything from hurricanes to criminal trials. He conducted numerous investigative reports for which he won several awards, and his “Restaurant Report” aired every Friday.

“What can you say?” Lowell said. “I struggled telling my own crew that this happened because Bill was such a part of this family, this community. It’s a great loss.”

Leger was 48 and is survived by his wife, Patricia (Tecoo); his daughters, Tatum and Tori; his parents, Stanley and Kathryn; and his aunt Rita.
