City offers information on food, points of distribution, code enforcement

The city of Port Arthur shares the following tips and information with residents recovering from Tropical Storm Harvey.
• Food will be served at noon Tuesday at Memorial Stadium, 2500 Jefferson Drive. Open to everyone.

• Points of Distribution, or PODS, will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Gillam Circle, Knights of Columbus Hall on West Port Arthur Road, Stonegate area behind Dylan’s Bar and Grill, 8601 Ninth Ave. and Memorial Stadium.

• The Port Arthur City Health Department will administer tetanus shots at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the health department.

• The Port Arthur City Health Department is available at Thomas Jefferson Middle School and able to assist in dressing changes, wound care and prescription assistance.

• Code enforcement for the city of Port Arthur is beginning its door-to-door damage assessments starting in areas with power outages.

• The Port Arthur Transit services will resume Sept. 5.

• The Port Arthur Public Works Department is continuing to monitor and assess all electrical infrastructures for safety.

• Be cautious approaching animals during this time. They’re stressed, hungry and may be aggressive. Please call Animal Control (409) 983-8785.

• The city has additional personnel on hand to assist with food establishment inspections. 

As a reminder, any food establishment that is without electrical power for periods of more than two hours is considered hazardous to food that is not held under proper temperature when the outage begins. Flood water may contain raw sewage, chemical waste, oil or silt that could contaminate foods or food contact surfaces.

• Legal volunteers will be on hand at the shelter at the Thomas Jefferson Middle School campus to answer questions. A number of attorneys have volunteered to help walk residents through the many forms for insurance and Federal Emergency Management Agency forms.The legal volunteers are not here to represent citizens, only offer advice.

• Mosquito control is now underway, but citizens are advised to keep bug spray on hand as well.

• The city is in need of volunteers. For more information, email parecovery@portarthurtx.gov. The volunteers will be coordinated through the distribution centers to the PODS.

• Donations are still needed. They can be brought to the city warehouse at 200 Houston Ave.

• Door-to-door solicitors are required to have a city issued permit.
