MOVIE GUY: ‘Keanu’ has one joke, but it’s still funny

Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele are two of the funniest guys working in comedy today.

On a totally unrelated note, cat videos continue to rule the internet.

A few years ago, somebody in Hollywood must have decided that combining these two unrelated items into one big action comedy would be a sure-fire way to get audiences laughing.

That turns out to be mostly true in the new movie, “Keanu,” which does feature some very funny moments and one truly adorable kitten in the title role, but the movie struggles to break free from its one-joke premise. The result is a funny film, but it’s not quite the comic gem that many of Key and Peel’s fans were hoping to see.

This is the story of a broken-hearted man named Rell (Peele) who has just lost his girlfriend, but he regains his love for life when he adopts the world’s cutest kitten, which he names Keanu. Rell absolutely dotes on his kitty, so his world falls apart when he comes home to find that somebody has broken into his house and catnapped his beloved pet.

Rell enlists his button-down cousin, Clarence (Key) in an improbably quest to find Keanu. The trail leads them deep into gang territory, where these two middle-class dudes are forced to adopt outrageous gangster personas in order to survive. There are a lot of funny moments as these two guys desperately try to act like street toughs using little more than pop culture references for their unbelievable characters.

Key and Peele have done a lot of comedy using code switching as a starting point. Their versatility as actors allows them to careen from one character to the next. One moment these are suburban dudes bopping their heads to the non-threatening sounds of George Michael’s “Father Figure,” then circumstances suddenly force them to adopt foul-mouthed, super-street gangsta rap personas. The comedy comes in the character whiplash as they try to impress the street gangs with outlandish acts that barely mask their character’s desperation.

It is quite funny, but it’s just an extended version of what Key and Peele were doing in their TV show. The jokes start to wear a bit thin by the end, although a couple of funny cameo performances and a lot of stylized action sequences keep “Keanu” from ever being dull.

Key and Peel are still two of the funniest guys working in comedy today. Their talent is undeniable, but let’s hope that their next project allows them to stretch a few more of their comic muscles.

Although they should definitely bring the cat back.
