Perez’s shot gives Seahawks first win

BEAUMONT — Lamar State College-Port Arthur worked all day Saturday in search of its first softball victory of the season, but it wasn’t until the final inning of play that the Seahawks found their win.

Scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Seahawks defeated North Central Texas College 6-4 to earn their lone win of the two-day Seahawks Classic, played at the College Street Athletics Complex.

Freshman Alexis Perez slapped the three-run walk-off home run against North Central Texas, taking the 1-1 pitch to left field, scoring Nicole Thorne and Sierra Miller for the win.

The Hawks led the game 2-0 after a run in the three innings when McKenzie Andrus doubled home Rebecca Hernandez on a double to centerfield in the second and Perez singled to left to score Kayla Sheridan in the third.

NCTC responded with two runs in the fourth to tie the game but the Seahawks managed another run in the bottom of the fourth when Andrus coming home on a Sheridan single to center. NCTC came back in the fifth for a run and a 4-3 lead, setting up Perez’ seventh-inning heroics.

Perez finished the game 2 for 4 with 3 runs batted in, while Andrus was 3 for 3 with a double and RBI. Thorn was 2 for 3 and Sheridan was 2 for 4. Hernandez earned the win on the mound, allowing seven hits for two earned runs with three strikeouts.

The Seahawks dropped the first two games of the day, losing to Faulkner State Community College of Alabama 11-7 and Trinity Valley Community College 6-1.

The Seahawks opened up with five runs against Faulkner State with Perez slapping her first home run of the day. But, LSCPA couldn’t hold on as Faulkner scored two runs in the first, one in the second, six in the third and two more in the fourth. Sheridan and Hernandez each picked up three hits in the game, each one with a double, while Sheridan tripled. Thorn and Andrus also each had a double in the game.

Hernandez took the loss on the hill after allowing 16 hits and eight earned runs, including three home runs.

Against Trinity Valley CC, Sierra Miller made an early impression with a solo home run in the first inning but that’s all the offense the Seahawks could muster.

Angelica Rogers took the loss on the mound for the Hawks, allowing six earned runs on 12 hits.
