Davis officially named LU baseball assistant

BEAUMONT — Weeks after being picked as Jim Gilligan’s successor as Lamar’s head baseball coach, Will Davis has officially been named assistant coach for the Cardinals this season.

The university announced the move Thursday, almost a full month after Davis was tabbed as the head coach beginning in the 2017 season. Gilligan is retiring after this season, ending a 39-year stay with the Cardinals.

Davis has spent time with the baseball team in recent weeks since deciding to leave LSU, where he was an assistant for the past eight seasons, but Lamar had only announced that he would take an unnamed position within the program. Jim Ricklefsen, who had been on Gilligan’s staff for the past 20 years, resigned in the wake of Davis’ hire to the head coaching position.

Davis, 31, will serve as third base and defensive coach.

Lamar begins its season Feb. 19 at Vincent-Beck Stadium against Southeast Missouri State. That three-game set will be followed by single games against Arizona (Feb. 22) and LSU (Feb. 24), both at home.
