Weisbrod’s usual game helps Seahawks

Colton Weisbrod scored his 27th point with 2:28 remaining, giving Lamar State College-Port Arthur a 66-64 lead. He just needed a little help from his teammates to pull out a win.

“We hit a lull on offense. Things weren’t going right and shots weren’t falling,” he said. “The free-throw line was kind of struggling in the first half, but it all came together the second half, and we got a couple of steals. … I think the defensive end is where it started.”

The Seahawks found clutch play in the final minute from Jordon Harris and Freddie Williams and came away with a 71-66 win over Coastal Bend College on Saturday afternoon inside the Carl Parker Center. The Seahawks (17-8, 9-5 Region XIV), who were a game behind San Jacinto College going into Saturday, have won two straight and seven of their last eight.

Weisbrod had 14 rebounds and three steals to go with his 27 points. He entered the game ranked fourth in Region XIV at 21.7 points per game.

“That’s why we like feeding the ball to Colton,” said Williams, who had 12 points and two steals. “He’s got good post moves, he’s 6-5, strong person, not as tall or big as everyone but he can handle it.”

Giovanni Collins, who led Coastal Bend (5-15, 1-13) with 15 points, nailed two free throws to tie the game at 66 with 2:01 left. The tie was broken with 52 seconds to go on Williams’ putback of a missed three-point shot by Christian Albright. Coming out of a timeout, the Cougars missed a contested layup, and Harris went to the line for a pair of made free throws. He hit one more on his last trip with 10.8 seconds left.

‘We made plays there in the stretch when we had to and we made our free throws when it counted,” LSC-PA coach Lance Madison said.

The Seahawks overcame a 19-for-33 free-throw shooting game and slow start to the second half to win. They turned the ball over three times, and Weisbrod — who made 11 of 17 from the stripe — missed two layups in the first 3 minutes as the Cougars scored the first four points to take a 42-35 lead.

It wasn’t their largest of the game. Scott sank a three-point shot for a 47-38 cushion at the 14:54 mark.

But LSC-PA can point to an improved defensive effort down the stretch. Coastal Bend, which made treys on four consecutive possessions midway through the first half, was held to 38.7 percent shooting in the second half after starting out hitting 46.7 percent (14 for 30). The Cougars hit 10 of 20 three-point attempts before halftime, but cooled off to finish 11 for 25.

“In the first half, we were playing slow, and I think it was mainly because it was the win over Angelina,” Williams said, referring to Wednesday’s 77-75 win over Angelina College to share second place with the Roadrunners. “We felt like we were going to beat these guys easily, that’s all.”

The defense was much needed for a Seahawks team hitting only 24 of 62 for 38.7 percent.

LSC-PA will host Houston Community College at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
